Tenacious D, the famous comic rock duo consisting of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, had to postpone their scheduled concert in Newcastle, Australia, on Tuesday following a controversy sparked by a remark about an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
The duo was set to perform in Newcastle as part of their "Spicy Meatball" tour. However, just hours before the sold-out show was to begin, Frontier Touring, the concert promoter, announced the postponement of the event. "Frontier Touring regrets to announce that tonight's Tenacious D concert at Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been postponed. Ticket holders are advised to keep their tickets until further information is available," the statement read.
The decision comes after Australian Senator Ralph Babet called for the duo's expulsion following a controversial joke made during their concert in Sydney. While celebrating Gass's birthday on stage, he was invited to make a wish while blowing out the candles on a cake. His response, "Don't miss Trump next time," sparked a strong reaction.
This comment came shortly after Donald Trump, a presidential candidate, was slightly injured by a bullet at a rally in Pennsylvania. This incident, which resulted in the death of a bystander and the serious injury of two other people, heightened the severity of the joke.
Ralph Babet, a senator from the United Australia Party, demanded a firm response: "Anything short of expulsion is an endorsement of the shooting and attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump," he asserted. "Allowing Tenacious D to stay in Australia after calling for the death of a president is unthinkable."
Despite this controversy, Tenacious D is still scheduled to perform in Brisbane on Thursday, Melbourne on Saturday, and Adelaide on July 22. So far, the duo has not publicly commented on the incident or the postponement of their Newcastle concert.
